Nobody really chooses the job of toilet custodian, including me. At the agency that books us, it’s just a rotation job − except when it’s for MeetMarcel: then we make an exception. At MeetMarcel, a toilet is almost as important as the ‘main stage’. You discover the latest soap, remarkably scented candles, even flower decorations that go with the theme. Of course, there are other agencies that do this; but I have the most fun with this creative team because of the locations where I’ve been able to be the toilet custodian.
I remember an old discotheque in Bailleul, in northern France: the client was a company that produces luxury light fittings, and we were dropped off that night at a dilapidated disco where time had stood still. I asked the man at the entrance if this was for MeetMarcel. Several hours later, the car park was full of fine cars, some burly security guards had taken their positions at the entrance, all of the posters were hung up, the bar crew was suitably styled, and even the glasses had been replaced. MeetMarcel had looked very consciously for this precise atmosphere.
And where it did not correspond to the soul of 20 years ago, where a certain element was too contemporary, that’s exactly where the MeetMarcel team intervened. Time and again, they create experiences that are sometimes super exclusive, sometimes incredibly simple, but always unique, in which not a single element is there by chance − these folks are maniacs!
